Hello, I do still exist. I seem to have taken an unintentional break from my blog. I went to write something a couple of times but I couldn’t think of anything to say, nothing that would make you want to stay anyways.
I almost wrote about my struggles of attempting to look after plants because I really had nothing.
Then I thought I’ll wait until we’ve been to Formula 1 and write about that… and then that got cancelled.
Then, I thought I’ll write about our trip to Vietnam and Singapore and create an itinerary (much like the east coast travels in our little red camper van) but then that got cancelled too.
So I’ve decided to write about how everything keeps getting cancelled, and that if you would like an event cancelled to let me know and I’ll book tickets for it.
As Iain and I have been living in Australia now for around 6-months (can you believe it? time flies when the planet is on fire and then enters a world pandemic) and we always knew that around the 6-month mark we’d be heading to Vietnam to visit my cousin and meet my granny and mum there. We booked the trip in January, with so much excitement to go to Asia (I’ve never been) and to see my family.
Obviously, we did not expect to have our trip cancelled. We were due to leave on Saturday the 14th of March, with the Coronavirus getting worse by the day we still believed everything would be okay, nothing was going to stop me from seeing my family. That was until I got the dreaded text at 11 pm (12 pm UK time) from my mum saying:
Call me as soon as you can.
She phoned to tell me that my cousin, who has been living in Vietnam for over a year on a visa, could not get back into Vietnam after visiting his family in the UK.
I then received a text the following morning with the words;
The trips cancelled Granny and I cant get visa’s..
Turns out Vietnam had become so strict about the entrance of European citizens that my Cousin, Granny and mum could not be granted visas. So then we were faced with a dilemma… do we still go? Can we get visa’s because we’re not entering from the UK? what if we get to Vietnam and I can’t re-enter Australia but Iain can? What if the virus gets so bad I have to head back to the UK?
Imagine I got stuck in Vietnam with the only person I know that lives there stuck in England, disaster. The risk just seemed too high, besides I am not ready to leave Australia just yet.
However, trying to get shifts in a hotel when A, you booked two weeks off and B, the coronavirus is ruining everyone’s fun (and holidays) has become a bit of a nightmare.
Naturally, the tourism industry has taken a huge hit because people are not being allowed to travel and if they do they need to self-isolate. Borders are shutting left right and centre, if you aren’t in the right country now you may not get back there for a long time.
Which is exactly why we’re not in Vietnam! Unfortunately, we didn’t get any money back from our airline company so over the last two weeks our luck has pretty much been at zero.
If I was going to get stuck anywhere though, I’m very happy it’s Melbourne!
