Quarantine Poem challenge

Last weekend my flatmate decided to set us a challenge (us being the rest of my flatmates) as with quarantine we are trying to find ways to enjoy ourselves without going crazy and wanting to murder each other.

My flatmate noticed that Rupi Kaur has been posting creative writing workshops on Instagram and thought it would be a good idea for us to all participate in one and see where our creativity lead us.

The challenge was to write a letter to whomever you chose with the opening line;

Dear Blank, I’ve been dying to tell you that...

As we began writing, Kaur was going to introduce a new word every 30 seconds (or so) which we had to interpret and add into our writing. The different ways we interpreted those words, literal and non-literal, were very interesting as everyone’s brains work very differently; although we were all set with the same task the outcomes were all very different.

The different people we chose to write too was also extremely interesting, most of us chose family – a sort of memoir to our family and things we would maybe one day tell them or perhaps couldn’t tell those who have passed on.

This experiment was great for relieving a weight which may have been building up on some. I won’t reveal who I wrote mine too or what I was dieing to tell them, that secret stays within our household!

After this we decided to participate in a poetry writing challenge, once again set by Kaur, we had to write down all the words associated with Cloud and then write a poem about the word cloud but not including any of the words we wrote down in our mind map.

So here is mine (side note I have never been any good at poem writing);

As the sky began to darken, so did my thoughts.
The colour seeping from the world creating fog amongst the organ in my head.
Everything became black and white with no clarity.
I look outside and see sadness spreading over the cracks in the surfaces.
People skulking inside feeling lost and lonely, looking up expectantly.
Waiting…
Waiting…
Waiting…
For the light.

We found this was a great way to spend some time together and challenge each other, it was very personal but also very private and enjoyable.
